ABS-CBN’s Gina Lopez to Grace Opening of Linggo ng Kalikasan

The celebration of the 2013 Linggo ng Kalikasan celebration spearheaded by the provincial government of Catanduanes will take center stage this June 17-21, with ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez as the guest of honor and keynote speaker.

Anchored on the theme, “Basura: Pangasiwaan para sa Kalikasan at Kabuhayan”, it will focus on the collective efforts to address solid waste management problems with emphasis on its environmental and economic dimensions.

The week-long activities will kick-off at 5:30 A.M. of June 17 with the “Takbo para sa Kalikasan” Fun Run from Catanduanes State University to the provincial capitol. Prior to the opening program at the capitol grounds, the Catanduanes Mangrove Conservation Center will be launched at the former Catanduanes Crab Center at Palnab del Sur.

At 1:30 pm, Ms. Lopez will be at a press conference at the conference hall of Catanduanes State University, after which she will proceed to the CSU gymnasium as sole resource speaker of the “No To Mining” Forum.

More than the other activities, it was the forum that really attracted and convinced Lopez to visit Catanduanes, said provincial tourism officer Carmel Garcia, who chairs the opening ceremonies and invitation of guests.

A staunch anti-mining advocate, Lopez launched the “Save Palawan Movement” along with partner organizations and stood up to the challenge of gathering 10 million signatures to say in one loud voice that key biodiversity areas must be protected from the ravages of mining.

Other activities slated are “Pauragan” and Arbor Day on June 18; collage making on June 19, “Tagisan sa Paglikha” on June 20, and “Gabi ng Parangal” on June 21. Pauragan is being coordinated by Catanduanes State University, Arbor Day by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office, collage making thru the office of SP environment committee chair PBM Lemuel Surtida, and Gabi ng Parangal by the Special Environmental Projects Coordinating Office (SEPCO) and Provincial Tourism Office.

Now on its 3rd year, the event began in 2011 by virtue of Provincial Ordinance 003-2010 institutionalizing the annual celebration of Linggo ng Kalikasan every 3rd week of June.
