The Old LORAN Station

I only passed once at this former US Coast Guard facility on Panay island when I was a growing-up kid. At that time, the station was no longer operational, but for the locals who used to be civilian employees, for them is a continuing saga. They would tell me stories about seaplanes delivering food supplies and mails, abundant supply of corned beef, men unafraid of rough seas and radar. In my later years, I never had a chance to see LORAN upclose, though had a chance to meet former civilian employees. The last time I heard someone talk about it, was from a resident at Panay island. He said that the former station was completely vandalized and the new occupants now are water buffalo. There should be an initiative to maintain the facility not only as a tourist destination but as well as a historical reminder for our province and also in memory for those who were once part of the station. A description of the air operations at LORSTA Catanduanes: "The island of Catanduanes lie…

A Fresh Look At Siling Labuyo

Siling labuyo (Capsicum frutescens) has the potential to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, cataract, and macular degeneration. This was stressed by Dr. Evelyn B. Rodriguez, professor from the Institute of Chemistry at the University of the Los Baños (UPLB) in a seminar on indigenous plants for health and wellness at the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) during its 19th National Research Symposium and in celebration of the 8th National Agriculture and Fisheries R&D Week. Also known as the chili pepper, siling labuyo is among the indigenous plants that the Department of Agriculture (DA) promotes through the "Indigenous Plants for Health and Wellness RDE Program” of BAR. The said program aims to promote and highlight the importance of indigenous plants and its products. The fruit of siling-labuyo is a popularly used as a spicy and chili condiment while its leaves are usually consumed as vegetables. In medicinal terms, the labuyo fruit was earlier utiliz…

At the foot of the mountain on the left, you can see a clearing near the river. The area was once used by the China Road and Bridge Corporation to park their heavy equipments, bunkhouses for engineers, storage of construction materials and site of the cement batching plant during the rehabilitation of the Catanduanes Circumferential Road project Phase 1. On the right you can view the road going to the tower. The approach is quite a steep climb roughly around 45 degrees and only military 4x4 trucks to managed climb at this point. Atop, is the tower that used to be a TV transmitter before it was leased to a telecommunication company and up to present…
